I meant to send this update before 2024 wrapped, but... well, life happened. Despite heroic quantities of coffee and the best intentions, my to-do list won. Again.

If I’m honest, the last few years have felt a bit like that. Big dreams for myself, Ripple, and this incredible community - but not everything landed where I hoped. Add in the colourful chaos of life (health, family, etc.), and I’ve often ended the year feeling like I just didn’t have it all together.

Late last year, a friend introduced me to the idea of ‘composting’ in the context of ‘stewarding loss’. Naturally, as an aspiring veggie patch queen, I pictured a pile of squishy tomatoes, rogue zucchinis, and maybe even a forgotten cucumber that liquefied in the fridge. At first glance, it’s just a mess - no clear win, no payoff in sight. But sometimes, the best thing you can do is toss it all in the compost bin, step back, and let nature work its weird, smelly magic.

That job you left, the project you abandoned, the thing you thought would bear fruit but didn’t? It’s not wasted. It’s compost. Sure, it’s messy and occasionally smells like failure, but it’s also what gives you a chance to grow something entirely new - potentially richer, healthier, and faster than you’d imagined. Sometimes, the best way forward isn’t saving the tomato plant - it’s letting it enrich the soil for whatever’s next. I hope this kick off to 2025 is giving you all the (not to smelly) compost vibes. With all of the social and global challenges we face, and a federal election looming, let’s take our compost and turn this year into a beautiful, productive garden.
