Steal this tactic

Are you still applying for jobs based on the job title? [Read: this is me trying very hard not to call this section… ‘Do you actually need to spend 20k+ on Masters to get a job?’] Because even though the answer is a hearty ❣️ probably not ❣️, what nerdy nerd doesn’t love the idea of spending 2 years going deep on a topic..? 🤓📚💛 And we all know the world needs some critical thinking rn. But I digress.

If you’re specifically thinking about things you can do that help you with that good ol’ goal of getting a job. like soon. Requires skills, productivity and results.

In the past few months I’ve spoken to countless founders and hiring leads and they often have a similar challenge.

“we need someone that can do [insert job title] but it’s more than that…”

all of the founders and hiring leads - 2024

And I proceed to chat to them about looking out for:

  • transferrable, adaptable skills & experiences

  • demonstrated ability to get results in different contexts

  • demonstrated attitude or work style like being proactive and a creative problem solver (ie. adaptable).

And it’s not just me.

A recent survey conducted by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) revealed that 87% of employers prioritise skills and experience over formal degrees when evaluating potential hires, especially in sectors like tech.

And it has got me thinking. Are you still applying for jobs based on a title? Building a port folio career isn’t just about working in different industries. It’s about focussing on how you can leverage your skills (as opposed to job title) to get a job done.

For example, we’ve been working with a number of organisations to recruit for roles with varying job titles, but they essentially require similar skills such as communications, creative problem solving and stakeholder engagement.

This is obviously not an exhaustive list. But if you’re looking to accelerate your impact career, developing these skills on top of your existing expertise can take you into almost any role; from grant advisor or community growth leader to chief of staff, policy analyst, diplomat, founder or impact strategist.

Steal this tactic: Ditch linear ladders. Think laterally about what jobs you apply for.

Got a career goal? what job(s) could help you grow your experience towards this, while also leverage your existing skills and experience? i.e. if you’re a communications professional, how could you leverage this to build community while also learning community organising & campaigning along the way?

Steal this tactic: How to stand out in a pool of candidates with the same quals. Add ‘years’ of experience to your resume without it taking literal years.

Micro skill development (ie. learning to do something, not just know about it) is also a top way to add “years of experience” to your resume. After-all, ‘years’ is often just a proxy for ‘we need you to be adept at a bunch of things’ that back in the day may have taken years.

Courses are a great way to do this, but another way is through other experiences where you take action, build a network and can generate results outside of a job.

1 Get involved helping organise or run an event or gathering in your sector (this can be time bound volunteering, so you can blend it with other life priorities). 🔥 Bonus: This also opens up new networks

2 Up skill with in-demand micro-credentials and then implement them in a time-bound project that gives you tangible results to point towards 📈 This also demonstrates initiative and self motivation.

3 Grow your contextual experience through a national or international delegation, network, fellowship or forum. There are many funded programs and digital networks to join that can help you get better at what you do and help demonstrate your ability to apply your skills in a different context (while contributing to a better world) 🌏 Bonus: This can help show you have a global outlook, even if you haven’t worked specifically in an international context.

Check out our ‘Growth Opps’ section that can help you unlock or leverage this skillset

And if you’re applying for jobs right now, remember to consider jobs based on skills required to get the job done, as opposed to just the job title🧋.
